Defending Democracy
Defending democracy starts at home. I’ll defend free speech, due process, and ensure Somerville remains a transparent, welcoming, pro-democracy city.
Defending Democracy, Starting Here
Standing up for rights, transparency, and civic power in Ward 5
“All politics is local.” Tip O’Neill’s words have never felt more urgent. As democratic institutions face threats across the country, the responsibility to protect them starts here, in cities like Somerville.
Somerville has a proud tradition of municipal freedom. It is right there on our city seal: Municipal Freedom Gives National Strength. That is not just a motto, it is a mission. We have led the way on sanctuary city protections, stood firm against authoritarian overreach, and governed with compassion and integrity. As your City Councilor, I will do everything in my power to uphold and expand that legacy.
Democracy is not an abstract idea. It is built and defended through everyday action; in neighborhood meetings, in city policy, and in who gets a seat at the table.
A Pro-Democracy Agenda for Somerville
1. Protect Free Speech and the Right to Protest
I will defend the rights of all residents to speak out, organize, and protest without fear. A silenced public is a vulnerable one. Democracy depends on active, vocal participation.
2. Fight for Due Process and Equal Protection
No one should face injustice because of their race, immigration history, or income. I will support policies that guarantee fairness, expand legal protections, and ensure our city services are responsive to every resident.
3. Expand Civic Access and Participation
From voting to city hearings, civic life must be accessible to all. I will work to improve language access, voter education, and outreach to underrepresented communities — including immigrants, renters, and young people.
4. Demand Transparent, Accountable Government
Trust starts with transparency. I will push for better public records access, more regular reporting from city departments, and a culture of openness that invites residents in rather than shutting them out.
5. Make Somerville a Pro-Democracy Leader
I will partner with leaders in other wards and cities to support civic education, local journalism, and public leadership opportunities. Our city can be a regional leader in defending democracy — not just reacting to threats, but building strength from the ground up.
I am running to make sure Somerville does not just defend democracy, but leads by example. Together, we can make our city a model of civic engagement, justice, and inclusion.
