Senior Support
Seniors deserve to stay active, independent, and connected—with access to support, transit, and community.
Dignity for Every Generation
Support, safety, and connection for Ward 5 seniors
Our elders helped build Ward 5. They raised families, organized neighborhoods, and gave decades to this community. Growing older in Somerville should not mean being left behind. It should mean staying safe, supported, and connected to the life you helped create.
As your Councilor, I will make sure that aging in place is more than a talking point. It will be a real, funded priority — with services, programs, and infrastructure that meet seniors where they are and treat them with the respect they have earned.
A Five-Point Plan to Support Somerville Seniors
1. Easier Access to Transportation
Getting around should not be a barrier to living independently. I will prioritize sidewalk repairs and pedestrian safety near senior housing, clinics, and community centers. I will also expand access to ride-share credits and taxi voucher programs for medical appointments, grocery trips, and essential errands.
2. Help at Home
Most seniors want to stay in the homes they love. I will launch the Ward 5 Care Corps — a team of trusted aides and trained volunteers who can help with basic tasks like cooking, cleaning, and wellness check-ins. This program will be supported through city grants and designed to be affordable for all who need it.
3. Snow Removal Services for Seniors
No one should be trapped indoors after a snowstorm. I will expand the city’s shoveling program for elderly and disabled residents and organize volunteer snow teams made up of neighbors and local students to assist quickly after major storms.
4. Community and Connection
Loneliness is a real threat to health and well-being. I will expand evening and weekend programming at community centers, including exercise classes, tech help, arts events, and game nights. I will also launch Silver Connect — a new intergenerational program that matches seniors with local youth for conversation, mentorship, and mutual learning.
5. Safe and Accessible Homes
Simple home upgrades can prevent major injuries. I will create a Safe Home Grant offering up to three thousand dollars for essential safety improvements like ramps, grab bars, brighter lighting, and non-slip flooring — helping more residents age in place safely and confidently.
Ward 5 should be a place where every resident can grow older with dignity, surrounded by care, connection, and opportunity. That is the future I will fight for.
