Diversity

As Diversity Officer and Human Rights Chair, I will fight for visibility, leadership, and opportunity for communities of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ residents.

Diversity and Representation

Equity is not a side issue — it is the foundation of real progress

Somerville is one of the most diverse cities in Massachusetts, and Ward 5 reflects that richness. But diversity only matters if it leads to visibility, voice, and real opportunity. Too often, people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ residents, and other underrepresented groups are left out of the conversation — or worse, expected to do the work without being given the platform.

As the Diversity Officer for the Ward 5 Democratic Committee and Chair of the Somerville Human Rights Commission, I have spent years fighting to change that. I will bring that same focus, discipline, and urgency to the City Council — because representation is not just about who is in the room, but who gets heard, respected, and resourced.

A Real Plan to Advance Equity and Visibility

1. Spotlight and Support Minority-Led Initiatives
I will create a Ward 5 Community Innovation Fund to support projects led by people of color, LGBTQ+ residents, and immigrant entrepreneurs. From arts programs to public events to small business pilots, we will lift up the leadership already happening in our neighborhoods.

2. Build More Inclusive City Boards and Commissions
I will push for targeted outreach and transparent application processes to ensure our city’s advisory boards and commissions reflect the communities they serve. That includes language access, youth engagement, and partnerships with trusted community organizations.

3. Mentor and Promote Emerging Leaders
I will launch a Ward 5 Civic Fellowship for young adults and first-time advocates from underrepresented backgrounds — providing leadership training, mentorship, and pathways into public service, local organizing, and political engagement.

4. Hold the City Accountable on Equity Goals
Equity needs structure and tracking. I will advocate for city departments to publicly report progress on hiring, contracting, and service delivery — disaggregated by race, language, and neighborhood — so we know where gaps exist and how to close them.

5. Celebrate Cultural Identity, Not Just Tolerate It
Representation also means joy. I will work with local groups to fund and expand cultural festivals, heritage events, and public art installations that reflect the full diversity of Ward 5 — because celebration is a form of power.

My Commitment
Diversity is not a checkbox. It is the beating heart of what makes Somerville strong. I will fight for visibility, opportunity, and lasting systems of support — so every neighbor, regardless of background, has a real shot at leading and thriving in our city.
