Our streets should work for everyone, especially those most at risk. Whether you are walking to school, biking to work, pushing a stroller, using a wheelchair, or driving to the grocery store, you deserve streets that are safe, reliable, and stress free.
As your Councilor, I will lead with safety and end with accountability. That means prioritizing people over speed, building infrastructure that prevents harm, and delivering real results — not endless studies. Transportation is not just about how we move. It is about how we live, connect, and thrive.
A Safer, Smarter Transportation Plan for Ward 5
1. Walkable, Calmer Streets
Let us make walking feel safe again. I will support targeted traffic calming in high-risk areas, safer midblock crossings near schools and parks, and smarter signal timing that works for pedestrians, not just drivers. I will also push for better lighting and clearer signage throughout Ward 5 so walking is not only safer, but more inviting.
2. Protected, Connected Bike Routes
Riding a bike in Somerville should not feel like taking your life into your hands. I will fight for a continuous, citywide network of protected bike lanes — not just painted lines or disconnected paths. These routes must be maintained year round and designed with input from everyday riders to ensure safety for all ages and abilities.
3. Design That Works for People
Street design should be intuitive and reduce daily stress. I will prioritize predictable intersections, high visibility crosswalks, reduced curb cuts, and better lines of sight at corners by removing parking spots that block views. These upgrades reduce collisions and make streets easier to navigate for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
4. Reliable, Accessible Transit
Buses should be fast, reliable, and easy to use. I will advocate for more frequent service, especially during evenings and weekends, along with better stop amenities like benches and real-time arrival displays. I will also support free or reduced fare programs for youth, seniors, and low-income residents — because public transit only works when people trust it will get them where they need to go.
5. Fix What Is Broken
Sidewalks with cracks and streets full of potholes are not just frustrating — they are dangerous. I will push for targeted investment in high-need areas across Ward 5, focusing on ADA-compliant sidewalks, smoother roadways, and crosswalks that are clearly marked and properly maintained. Safety starts with the basics.
6. Smarter Traffic Management
Cars are part of the system and must coexist with all other road users. I will push for better traffic flow through upgraded signal timing, safer curbside loading policies, and dynamic parking strategies that reduce double parking and congestion — especially near schools, small businesses, and key intersections.
7. Transparency and Accountability
We cannot fix what we do not measure. I will publish clear metrics on traffic injuries, 311 repair requests, sidewalk accessibility, and transit reliability. I will also create a Ward 5 Transportation Task Force made up of residents, planners, and accessibility advocates to ensure our goals are community driven and transparently tracked.
